Industrial training

In the Bachelor of design program students are required to participate in a 4-month industrial training period in a company of personal choosing. I selected Don Carolis & Sons, a furniture designing and manufacturing company, which was started about 150 years ago. The company mostly follows traditional designs styles and details.

Learning outcomes

  • Industrial design process
  • Handling customer projects
  • Learning corporate practices
  • Understanding and developing products  for a brand according to the brand guidelines
  • Manufacturing processes

Individual project handled by me

I discovered a rarely used technique for wood bending in my research and I wanted to develop a product that demonstrated the feasibility and the advantages of the technique.

Within my training period I designed a coffee table and developed the manufacturing process for it. Later This item was added to the brand catalog and has been a frequently selling item due to its uniqueness.

Advantages of the technique

  • Cost effective method to get a curved wooden surface
  • Requires less material than alternative techniques to get a curve
  • Continuous grain giving an aesthetical appearance
  • Can be applied for mass producing items

Manufacturing technique

Getting the required wooden sheet and applying the required amount of cuts.
